This study revealed the presence of microplastics in Adélie penguins from Antarctica’s remote Svenner Islands. They discovered tiny plastic particles in the penguins’ lungs, trachea, and gastrointestinal tract, highlighting how even the most pristine ecosystems are being impacted by global pollution. Penguins are considered important bio-indicators of Antarctic environmental health, making these findings a significant signal of the growing reach of microplastic contamination and its potential impact on fragile polar ecosystems.
